”A molcajete is a Mexican mortar and pestle made of volcanic rock that’s used for grinding, mashing, and serving food. The word “molcajete” comes from Aztec words meaning “bowl” and “seasoning”.

Today I went to a local Mexican restaurant for dinner. They have something on their menu that is served in a volcanic rock bowl as described above. The dish shares the same name as the bowl it is served in. When the waitress arrived at our table and asked what I would like to order, I told her I’d like the Molcajete please! I’ve been to this restaurant a few times and always wanted to try it. I haven’t ordered it before today because it is the most expensive thing on the menu. I guess I felt like splurging today and treated myself. I am glad I did because it was damn good!

Their Molcajete comes with sizzling steak, slices of grilled chicken, jumbo shrimp in a medium-spicy cream sauce. Served with tortillas, rice and beans.
It arrives at the table boiling hot too!

  1. Yes, this is not the first time I heard of molcajetes. I heard that it was used for traditional Mexican dishes. So it’s cool that the restaurant is serving the dish with the same name as the bowl. This is quite impressive.
